Is music your passion? Are you interested in recording and mixing music in the studio, sound engineering, making music and practicing your instrument? Music technology could be a career for you !

A music technologist is a music production and sound reproduction professional. In the Pop & Jazz Conservatoire’s Music Technology specialisation, you will learn about sound production, mixing, sound engineering, camera, video and lighting technology, as well as music making.

The following instruments can be studied as the main instrument in music technology training: alto saxophone, alto violin, baritone saxophone, bass saxophone, beatboxing, DJ, accordion, flute, kantele, guitar, clarinet, double bass, keyboards, vocals, recorders, percussion, mallets, mandolin, trombone, percussion, piano, rap, drums, cello, soprano saxophone, electric bass, electric guitar, electric organ, tenor saxophone, computer, trumpet, tuba, vibraphone, violin or other instrument.

A Bachelor’s degree in music gives general eligibility for postgraduate study, so a graduate can apply for a place at a university or university of applied sciences.

In addition to the Pop & Jazz Conservatory’s vocational degree, students may choose to complete the studies required for the upper secondary school leaving certificate at Konepaja adult upper secondary school in Helsinki (not at a day school).

What does Music Technology include?

Music Technology students at the Pop & Jazz Conservatoire have the opportunity to study recording and mixing in a state-of-the-art recording studio. Recording studies and gigs can be done either in your own concert hall or in clubs. Camera and video technology, lighting technology and video production are part of the sound engineering studies.

The studies include a lot of independent work in the recording studio on projects related to your studies, as well as collaborative projects with music students in the studio and at concerts on tasks such as recording, sound engineering and streaming.

The studies involve making music, and there is also an optional course in music production. Lessons in playing one’s own instrument and ensemble studies, as well as music theory, composition and transcription are also part of the music technology training.

A music technologist with a bachelor’s degree in music technology is able to work in recording and sound engineering and to use music information technology applications.
